The Background to Wellness
The health of any workplace is based in the health of its individual employees. Societal health costs reflect what we are as a society. As a society we have lost physical fitness, and most importantly the feeling of what it means and the knowledge of how to achieve it.
What are the Problems?
For individuals, simply look around:
- Weight - diabetes
- Heart & lungs
- Emotional stress - depression
- Mobility – back, joints, hips
For corporations, it’s the bottom line:
- Lost time – annual average: 7.5 days/year/employee
- Lower on-the-job productivity
What are the Solutions?
Athletic Directions teaches health and wellness – how to acquire, maintain, and regain fitness as part of a lifestyle.
Athletic Directions approaches work for the modern world. They are simple, they make use of available time, and they are continually reinforced by the experience of ongoing, positive physical and emotional changes. Most importantly, they are not based on fads and trends.
The approaches are based on:
- Basic physiology
- Long, practical experience
- Core tools for fundamental positive life change
They work for the employee, the employee’s family, and the corporate family.
Who should participate?
Anyone interested in health and wellness – from Classic Couch Potatoes to Masters Hotshots. Although the approaches are tried and true, they are better-known in Europe and they fundamentally differ from the North American.
There is a real opportunity to learn at whatever fitness level the employee currently has.
How does Athletic Directions Work?
Focus on both physical fitness and modern living – lifestyle choices.
Healthy physically active lifestyle means to develop/improve:
1. Heart and lungs
2. Balance and core strength
3. Physical growth
Lifestyle choices are the key to the future, once the pathways to fitness are established.
What is physical fitness based on?
A philosophy of real fitness is based on sound knowledge of physiology - how the body responds to activity.
Fitness is acquired, maintained, and developed by:
-
• Progression without injury - feel better every morning
-
• Improvements - learn how to work with your body, not against it
-
• Time, patience, growth - it takes a year to recover and control of the heart
Athletic Directions’ approaches are tried and true.
-
•Nothing new
-
• Low intensity before high intensity
-
• Master simple tasks before increasing their complexity
-
•Nothing complex
-
• Aerobic exercise before anaerobic
-
• Core strength & balance first
-
• Weight training optional, and much, much later
-
•Nothing trendy
-
• Basic rules of real physical fitness have not changed for 1000’s of years
-
• We will teach to apply those rules in the modern world
The approach will benefit all who willingly chose to participate, and is tailored to individual physical capacities and needs. It identifies the specific and distinct needs of men and women for health recovery. A key focus is on simple health recovery through developing aerobic abilities (low intensity age/ability specific), core strength & balance; and importantly enjoyment.
The approach will improve the well-being of individuals, their work environments, and will influence their family members through by:
Knowledge
Health recovery time-frame & progressions
How to acquire and maintain fitness
Action
Exercise (activities, options, control of time & intensity)
Technique & safety
Empowerment
